A domain name is the address of a website. Basically, it's the name you type in any browser to access a specific website you wish. Domain names hold a great deal of importance because they make it easy for people to remember the address of a website.

Without a Domain Name, it would have been extremely problematic to recall the IP address of every website you wanted to access.

What's a Domain Name Made Up Of?

A domain name can comprise any combination of English alphabet letters (A-Z) and numbers (0-9). You can even use dash characters like "-".

These names are used in combinations with various domain name extensions like:-.com, .net, .in, and .org. These extensions are called as Top Level Domains or TLDs.

As we discussed above TLD stands for Top Level Domain. Out of 100s options, there are three types of TLDs available such as:

  1. gTLD:- These are Generic Top Level Domains including- .com, .net, .gov, .org, and more.

  2. sTLD:- These are Sponsored Top Level Domains including- .museum, .travel, .sch, etc.

  3. ccTLD:- These are Country Code Top Level Domains based on the country of origin including- .ca, .uk, .fr, etc.

However, out of all these, the most common ones that we encounter in our daily lives are:-

  1. .com standing for commercial.

  2. .org standing for organization.

  3. .net standing for the network.

  4. .gov standing for the government.

  5. .mil standing for the military.

  6. .edu standing for education.

How To Register a Domain Name?

When you register a domain name, you are reserving that name for your personal use. No one else can use it as long as you continue to renew it. Another important point to remember is that Domain Names are renewed every year.

In order to renew your domain name you have to pay a minimal amount of fee. Domain names are usually registered through domain registrars, such as Google Domains, etc.

Can You Change Your TLD?

Yes, you can change your TLD. However, you should carefully consider why you are changing your TLD, as it could impact how search engines find and rank your website.
